How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in an Interview

The Most Dangerous Interview Question

“Tell me about yourself” is almost always the first question asked in an interview. Most people panic and start rambling about their childhood, their pets, or they just read their resume out loud. This is a massive mistake. This question is a test of your communication skills and professional focus.

The “Present-Past-Future” Formula

This simple formula will give you a polished, impressive answer every time, keeping it under 2 minutes.

1. Present: Where are you right now?

“Currently, I’m an Account Executive at XYZ Corp, where I handle our top-tier clients and just finished a quarter where we increased revenue by 12%.”

2. Past: How did you get there?

“Before that, I spent three years at ABC Inc working in sales support, where I really cut my teeth in understanding the customer journey and B2B communication.”

3. Future: Why are you here today?

“While I’ve loved my time at XYZ, I’m looking for an opportunity to step into a management role, which is why I was so excited to apply for this Team Lead position with your company.”

What Not to Do: Never ask “What do you want to know?” Inquire about the role later. Right now, drive the narrative.
