Mastering the Video Interview: Lighting, Audio, and Background

The New First Impression

Your firm handshake and polished shoes don’t matter anymore. In a video interview, your lighting, audio quality, and internet connection are your first impression. If you look like you are broadcasting from a hostage bunker with terrible audio, you look unprofessional.

The Holy Trinity of Video Calls

1. Lighting is Everything

Never sit with a window directly behind you; you will look like a silhouette. Lighting must come from in front of you. Sit facing a window, or invest in a cheap ring light. Soft, frontal lighting makes you look healthy, alert, and professional.

2. Elevate Your Camera

Do not look down at your laptop camera. It creates an unflattering angle and makes you look condescending. Prop your laptop up on books until the camera lens is perfectly at eye level. When speaking, look directly into the lens, not at the screen. This simulates making direct eye contact.

3. Audio Quality > Video Quality

People can forgive a slightly blurry video. They will not hire you if your audio is echoing, clipping, or picking up background noise. Use a dedicated headset or an external microphone like a Blue Yeti. Never rely on the built-in laptop microphone.

The Background Check

Blurring your background is acceptable, but a clean, curated physical background is better. A bookshelf, a plant, and a neat wall show that you are organized and have a dedicated workspace.
